Wetlands Day activities include Kawainui Marsh tour
If you’ve ever driven by Kawainui Marsh in Kailua without giving a second thought to what it has to offer, then it might be time for a visit on Feb. 4.
Meet at Kailua United Methodist Church (1110 Kailua Road) for a day full of education and cultural exhibits, live entertainment and tours of the marsh lands from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. as part of a celebration of World Wetlands Day and the marsh’s designation as a Wetland of International Importance.
Besides a climbing wall from Kama‘aina Kids, the Department of Land and Natural Resources will be screening its documentary "The Rain Follows the Forest" at 11 a.m., followed by a talk-story session.
Marsh tours are free but pre-registration is required. Contact Kaimi Scudder at 263-8008 or email@ahahui.net. For more information about wetlands day, email info@waa-hawaii.org.

HMSA hosts PSA video contest for teens
Middle and high school students are encouraged to create public-service announcements for an annual video contest on teen-health issues.
The 2012 HMSA Teen Video Awards Contest accepts submissions of 27-second PSAs focusing on one of four categories: addiction prevention, healthy living, mental health or teen safety. The process helps students learn about script writing, video production, copyright and privacy laws.
Winners receive funds for their school to purchase video equipment or software. The first-place winner is also awarded $1,000; second place, $500; and third place, $250. The video awarded Best of Show receives an additional $1,000, and additional prizes will be given respectively by the Hawaii Meth Project, MADD and the Domestic Violence Action Center for the top video on the risks of meth use, underage drinking and dating or family violence.
The public can vote for their favorite videos at hmsa.com from 8 a.m. April 2 to 4 p.m. April 13. The video receiving the most votes is awarded a Voters’ Choice award, valued at $500.
Information packets, contest rules, entry and release forms were distributed to schools statewide and can be found at hmsa.com/tva. Both group and individual entries will be accepted.
Deadline for submissions is March 5.
