Defense is everything for the Moanalua girls soccer team.
And it is more than enough for their first OIA championship in a decade.
Na Menehune beat Kapolei 2-0 to win the OIA Red girls soccer championship at Kapolei on Friday night. Fittingly, it was the main parts of their defense, Kaisha Chu and Storm Kenui, who provided the scoring.
"Coaching ends at the sideline," Moanalua coach Nikki Dela Pena said. "Those girls, all the girls, they finished it, they executed well. It is all theirs."
Chu gave Moanalua its first goal in the 42nd minute, taking advantage of a rare lapse by the Hurricanes. Chu received a pass on a throw-in while the Hurricanes seemed to be wondering who had possession. As soon as she got the ball, Chu rolled a hot grounder that deflected off at least two Kapolei defenders before squirting past the keeper.
"That set the tone for the second half," Kenui said. "I thought they were slow to transition and it was like, ‘here we go.’ "
Kapolei’s interior defense hit its knees as soon as the score was registered, seeming to know that one goal would be all that Moanalua would need. After all, Na Menehune have not given up a goal since before Christmas, when they surrendered two to Kaiser. They were the only goals Moanalua would give up all season.
"I think we played into their strengths in the first half," Kapolei coach Brian Beck said. "We adjusted in the second half, but unfortunately our passes didn’t go through and we didn’t get enough movement on the ball."
Na Menehune got their insurance in the 70th minute when Kenui dribbled the ball to the top of the box and blistered a low shot that rocketed past the keeper. That was more than they would need, thanks to the defense and keeper Domenique Banta, who finished the game a filthy mess but had her 10th shutout.
"Our defense is amazing," Kenui said. "I give everyone credit, they give 100 percent and that is all I ask of everyone on the team."
Na Menehune last won the OIA in 2000 and will get a seeded berth when they try for their first state championship in next week’s tournament. Kapolei will join them, along with Mililani, Kaiser, Pearl City and Aiea.
