It was an action-filled day with great tube rides at the Volcom Pipe Pro surf contest at Banzai Pipeline on Sunday.
California’s Chris Ward was the day’s standout in the 4- to 6-foot waves with tricky wind conditions. Ward scored three 9.0-plus rides, giving him the highest heat total of the contest thus far with a 19.00 out of 20.00.
Ward got his first two scores for a pair of bulbous right barrels at Backdoor. His third came from a late drop into the barrel that he came screaming out of at Pipeline.
Ward is no stranger to Pipeline, having made several finals in years past.
In his postheat interview, Ward said he was "feeling good" and that he was just "having a good session."
Ward advanced to the next round, along with Hawaii’s Sean Moody, who came in second in the heat.
The day’s only perfect 10 went to 19-year-old Carlos Munoz of Costa Rica.
"I feel like I want to cry," Munoz said. "This is my dream. Yesterday was my birthday. This is a present for my birthday. I feel so happy.
Munoz had scored a 7.0 and an 8.8 before he got the 10 on his last wave at Backdoor. He took off late and air-dropped right into the barrel. Several sections fell ahead of him and he was so deep you could not see the tip of his board the whole time. The wave started to close out and Munoz somehow popped out right as the wave shut down around him. The lip of the wave actually landed on him, but he held his composure and held on. Perfect 10 straight across the board.
Munoz scored the second-highest heat total with an 18.60.
Kauai’s Koa Smith won his heat with a near-perfect 9.73 barrel he got at Backdoor. Hawaii island’s Torrey Meister had the highest heat total among Hawaii surfers with a 15.67.
The contest continues today, surf permitting.
