Kamehameha’s comeback victory on Tuesday ended the race for first place in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball standings while opening up the chase for second.
The third-ranked Warriors’ dramatic 46-45 win over No. 2 Academy of the Pacific at Kekuhaupio Gym kept them alive in the hunt for second place and the accompanying state-tournament berth while sealing the ILH Division I championship for Punahou.
Kamehameha (6-4) battled back from a nine-point third-quarter deficit and guard Dyrbe Enos hit both ends of a 1-and-1 with 13.3 seconds left for the last two of his game-high 18 points to lift the Warriors to the win.
The top two teams after the regular season secure state tournament berths. The third of three ILH bids will be decided in a tournament for third place
“We’re still alive, we have to win out and get a little bit of help and we have a chance at second,” Kamehameha coach Julian Nakanishi said. “We don’t want to go into that third-place tournament, That’s a tough backdoor to find.”
Kamehameha faces ‘Iolani on Saturday and Maryknoll on Tuesday.

AOP’s second straight loss coupled with Punahou’s 56-43 win over ‘Iolani on Tuesday means the Dolphins (7-3) can’t catch the Buffanblu (10-1) for first place while bringing Kamehameha and Maryknoll into the picture for second.
The Dolphins will try to rebound against Maryknoll (6-4) on Thursday and close the ILH season against Punahou next Tuesday.
“We just opened the door for everybody to have a chance at second place,” AOP coach Wally Marciel said.
“(Tuesday’s loss is) done already, we wiped it out in the locker room and we need to move on and get focused on Maryknoll.”
Kamehameha had been on the other end of frantic finishes in its previous two games, losing to ‘Iolani and Punahou by a total of three points.
This time, the Warriors drained clutch free throws to take the lead and survived when AOP missed two potential go-ahead shots in the final seconds.
“We finally caught a break that hasn’t been going our way all season,” Nakanishi said. “It was a welcomed break.”
AOP took a 26-19 lead into halftime, led by Wilson MacLeod’s 13 first-half points. The Dolphins scored the first bucket of the third quarter to push the lead to nine, but Kamehameha turned up its defensive intensity to spur a 14-2 run and took a 33-30 lead on a 3-pointer by J.T. Campbell.
“We went small and had to turn it up a notch and use our old faithful trapping defense,” Nakanishi said.
AOP again surged ahead late in the period and led 43-39 with 5:07 left in the fourth quarter when Artur Mkrtychyan made a layup while drawing an intentional foul.
But Kamehameha answered with a jumper by Austin Gerard and a three-point play from Campbell to reclaim the lead.
AOP’s Carter Kauwenaole scored on a driving floater with 1:47 left to put the Dolphins up 45-44.
A chance to add to the lead slipped away with a missed front end of a 1-and-1 and Enos was fouled near midcourt with 13.3 seconds left.
Enos said he’d been in a similar spot against ‘Iolani earlier this season and came up empty from the line.
“That was going through my mind, but at the same time I had to be confident,” Enos said.
This time, he made both shots to give the Warriors the lead.
After a timeout, AOP’s Drew Viena’s jumper was off target and David Daniel had a shot at a tip in, but the ball again refused to fall and Kamehameha’s Noah Borden secured the rebound with 0.8 seconds left.
