The ILH’s decade-long reign over girls soccer will continue.
Kamehameha beat Mililani 4-0 and ‘Iolani stopped Moanalua 1-0 in the semifinals of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts state girls soccer championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Friday night, ensuring the Interscholastic League of Honolulu a champion for the 10th straight year.
The Raiders solved Na Menehune’s stellar defense just once in the second semifinal, but it was enough.
Kamehameha had no problem in the first semifinal, clicking on all cylinders to oust the last Oahu Interscholastic Association team to claim a Division I state title. Mililani last won it in 2002.
"They were pretty amazing tonight," Kamehameha coach Missy Moore said. "They did a really good job, it was a total team effort, everyone contributed, everyone played hard and you can’t ask for more than that from a team."
Freshman Makue Kawai scored from 20 yards out in the 15th minute and sophomore Hannah Kaina added another in the 32nd minute. Both shots were blistered, chasing Mililani keeper Courtney Wilson from the game. Wilson was playing in place of regular keeper Lauren Ishii, who suffered a concussion against Kapolei in the first round. Wilson came out but returned to finish the game.
The Warriors handled desperate Mililani in the second half, getting a goal from Junior Abcde Zoller in the 50th minute and Carly Neal in the 53rd minute.
Every time the Warriors got a foot on the ball near the goal, they unleashed a shot that was nearly impossible for any keeper to corral.
"They were good shots, our goalkeeper made her best attempt but they were just rockets," Mililani coach Ray Akiona said. "You have to give respect to those shots and just say they were just great shots."
Whether those shots will be there against ‘Iolani tonight remains to be seen. The Warriors beat ‘Iolani by a point for the ILH title but the Raiders beat them 2-1 in the middle of December and the teams played to a draw in January.
"It’s just one of those things," Moore said. "With finishing you can work on it and work on it and sometimes they are going to go in and sometimes they are not.
"It’s just one of those things you have to work on all the time and hope and pray it goes in."
The Trojans are winless in five matches against ILH schools in the state tournament since 2008, falling to Kamehameha twice, Punahou twice and ‘Iolani. They have scored four goals in all of those matches combined and have given up 13.
"No regrets," Akiona said. "We had a good OIA season, had a glitch in the OIA playoffs but you know what, to come all the way back at states, we’re happy with our results. I still like our team."
