Suspect arrested after beating in Waikiki

A 48-year-old man was in critical condition with head and facial injuries after being beaten during an early morning fight Wednesday in Waikiki.

Police arrested a 22-year-old man for investigation of second-degree attempted murder. The suspect allegedly hit his victim with a chair and his fists after an argument that escalated into violence, police said.

The incident happened on Kaiolu Street just after 1:15 a.m., police said.

Man indicted on tax-evasion charges

A former Maui resident was indicted by a federal grand jury last week on charges he evaded $500,000 in taxes.

Michael Eric Stewart, charged with evading tax payments and one of structuring transactions to evade reporting requirements, filed no income tax returns from 1997 to 2006 despite earning substantial income while soliciting mortgage loans as the owner of Infinity Mortgage Co. on Maui, the indictment said.

In 2008, Stewart left Maui for Panama City.

"We will be actively attempting to secure his presence in court," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth Sorenson.

The grand jury indicted Stewart on one count of evading tax payments and one of structuring transactions to evade reporting requirements.
