Marine charged with attempted murder
A 22-year-old Kaneohe Marine was charged with second-degree attempted murder after he allegedly hit a 48-year-old man with a stool and his fists during an argument in a Waikiki parking lot.
Brandon Calhoun appeared in Honolulu District Court Friday morning and is being held in lieu of a $200,000 bail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 14.
Police said the victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition with head and facial injuries following the incident, which occurred at 1:15 a.m. Wednesday in a parking lot on Kaiolu Street.
The suspect allegedly hit his victim with a stool and his fists after an argument that escalated into violence, police said.
Pedestrian struck by car dies of injuries
A man who sustained critical injuries when he was struck by an unlicensed driver in Ewa Beach last month has died.
The incident happened at Fort Weaver Road and Kilaha Street at about 9:20 a.m. Jan. 16, police said.
A car was turning left from Ewa Beach Road onto Fort Weaver Road when it struck the pedestrian, who was in a marked crosswalk going from the Kilaha side to the Ewa Beach Road side, police said.
The pedestrian was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. The Honolulu Police Department’s Traffic Division said it was told by medical examiners Friday that the man died.
The driver was arrested at the scene on counts of negligent injury and driving without a license.
The fatality was the eighth traffic fatality of the year. The traffic death toll at this time in 2011 also was eight.
Aiea restaurant reopens after kitchen fire
Makino Chaya in Aiea reopened at 11:45 a.m. Friday after damage from a small kitchen fire earlier in the morning was cleaned up, said Chris Mitchell, general manager of the restaurant.
Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said a sprinkler system kept the fire from spreading.
Water damage is estimated at $30,000 to the second-floor restaurant and the 7-Eleven store on the first floor of the building at 98-150 Kaonohi St. The fire started just before 3 a.m. in a trash container in the kitchen.
Kalihi man arrested in sex assault on teen
A 24-year-old Kalihi man was arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with the sexual assault of a underage girl in Ewa Beach earlier that day.
Police said the man, who is a family acquaintance, sexually assaulted the girl, 17, at her Ewa Beach home at about 4 a.m. Wednesday. The suspect was arrested in Kalihi at about 12:45 p.m. Thursday and is being held pending one count of first-degree sexual assault.

Alleged meth trafficker jailed
Hawaii County police have charged a 42-year-old Kailua-Kona man with methamphetamine trafficking, reckless endangering and other offenses.
Chad Cunningham, 31, was sought by police after he fled from an attempted traffic stop on Alii Drive on Jan. 31. Police said that as he drove away he passed a stopped school bus dropping off passengers.
Police arrested Cunningham Wednesday following a foot chase from his Alii Drive apartment. After obtaining a search warrant for his bag, police found 13.4 grams of crystal meth in 14 bags, paraphernalia associated with drug distribution and an electric stun gun.
Police charged him Thursday. He remained in custody on $116,500 bail.
