The Boogie is back. Bodyboarders from all regions of the world took over the Banzai Pipeline for the opening day of the International Bodyboarding Association Pipe Pro.
Competitors from around the world were greeted by 4- to 6-foot waves that reached heights of 8 feet by evening. It was a great opening day with big barrels, high scores and even a 10-point ride. Rounds 1 and 2 of both the men and women’s were run.
The waves really started pulsing in the sixth heat of the men’s second round, with the largest waves of the day rolling through with all competitors getting high scores. Honolulu’s Jacob Vandervelde convincingly won the heat after pulling into a pair of Backdoor barrels and packing a huge Pipeline cavern.
"It was awesome," Vandervelde said. "I got what I paid for; it was Pipeline at its finest."
"I was kind of late on that drop and I had to hang onto the wall real quick. I thought I was done for. Surprisingly I made it and pulled it off. I am just tweaked right now; this natural high is the best feeling ever. This is why I bodyboard every day, to get barrels like that."
The day’s perfect 10 went to Australia’s Lewy Finnegan for an amazing wave at Backdoor.
Alex Lincoln of Port Macquarie, Australia, advanced with a heat win during his first trip to Hawaii.
"I am pretty stoked," Lincoln said. "I just picked the right ones and got lucky. It’s supposed to be big tomorrow, so I am going to try and get amped tonight and give it a good dig."
The IBA Pipeline challenge is the first stop on the world tour of bodyboarding. The contest boasts $35,000 in prize money and world tour points. Competition is expected to resume today, as wave heights are projected in the 10- to 15-foot range with favorable winds.
