UHH’s Russell sixth at John Burns golf
Hawaii-Hilo’s Travis Russell is tied for sixth and Hawaii’s Cory Oride is tied for ninth after Thursday’s second round of the John Burns Intercollegiate at the Turtle Bay Resort’s Arnold Palmer Course.
California leads the team competition at 20-under 556. SMU is second at 560 and New Mexico is third at 566. Hawaii is ninth at 580, Hawaii-Hilo is tied for 11th at 589 and Brigham Young-Hawaii is 18th at 620.
SMU’s Sam Fidone and Duke’s Julian Suri are atop the leaderboard at 9-under 135.
Russell shot a second-round 69 and is at 5-under 139 for the tournament, while Oride also fired a 69 and is at 140.
BYU-Hawaii women rout Dominican
Shayla Washington had 31 points and 12 rebounds, and Danyele Hoffman had 15 assists as Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Dominican 94-74 in a Pacific West Conference women’s basketball game Thursday at the Cannon Activities Center.
Brianna Jessop added 20 points and Tessa Carter had 15 for the Seasiders (5-16 and 4-9), who held a 56-36 rebounding advantage. Kimi Nakamura scored 26 points and Stephanie Carnes added 19 for Dominican (4-20, 3-11).
» In the men’s game, Tsung-Hsien Chang scored 29 points as BYUH (14-8, 11-2) downed Dominican (8-17, 7-7) 80-72.
Hilo baseball splits with Pacific
Dane Kinoshita pitched five scoreless inning and Joshua Wong drove in two runs as Hawaii-Hilo beat Pacific 5-1 to salvage a split of a doubleheader Thursday at Wong Stadium.
In the first game, Kevin Schwartz had three hits and three RBIs to lead Pacific to an 8-6 victory. Wong homered and drove in four runs for the Vulcans.
