At halftime Kalani coach Mike Ching told forward Leo Klink to make a special moment in the second half.

Klink obeyed and Kalani dethroned Punahou.

Klink scored in the 80th minute and the Falcons ousted two-time defending state champion Punahou 3-2 in the Division I quarterfinals of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts/HHSAA Boys State Soccer Championships on Thursday night at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

"He is such a special player," Ching said. "He earned it. He always comes through."

Kalani (14-1) moves on to play Kapolei at 5 p.m. at the stadium today. ‘Iolani and Mililani follow with the other semifinal.

While both teams had overtime on their minds, Klink got the ball in the box, dribbled around Punahou defender Ian Matsukawa and beat the keeper high for his 24th goal of the season.

"My wonderful team just passes the ball to me all the time," Klink said. "I just had to finally give them one. My team deserves this."

While the Buffanblu (8-2) were defending state champions and current ILH champions, this Kalani group had no pedigree, making its first state appearance since 2007.

"It hurts. The boys worked hard to be here, and when it ends like this it hurts," Punahou coach David Trifonovitch said. "We played our hardest and gave it everything we had and you have to give credit to Kalani. They scored goals when they needed to."

The Buffanblu scored the only goal of the first half on a defensive lapse by Kalani’s best defender. Kazuto Moribe had been shutting down Punahou’s offense but gave it up in the middle of the box in the 38th minute, then watched Buffanblu striker Quincy Marting dribble past him and beat keeper Shawn Donnelly for a goal up top.

But Moribe made up for his lapse in the second half, serving a bender in front of Punahou’s goal in the 50th minute that bounced around until Kevin Carroll corralled it, dribbled around a defender and lifted a floater just over the keeper’s outstretched hands.

Carroll did it again for Kalani’s second goal, stealing a clearing attempt and one-touching a grounder into the goal in the 60th minute.

The Falcons only needed to play defense from there, but Byran Yamada tried to clear a ball from the front of Kalani’s goal and hit Punahou’s Alex Lam instead. Lam calmly collected the ball and beat Donnelly with a crisp shot into the right side of the goal in the 72nd minute to make it 2-2.

"I am so proud of these boys," Ching said. "They are two-time defending state champs and fantastic and they probably outplayed us a little bit tonight, but we got our legs back and weathered the storm."

Kapolei 4, Baldwin 0

Kapolei skipped all of the drama in the quarterfinals this time, dominating Baldwin to win 4-0.

"We finally started playing the way we should be playing," Kapolei (12-1-1) coach Bryce Kaneshiro said. "The chemistry of the guys worked well. When things are clicking like they were today, that’s what you see."

The Hurricanes needed overtime and penalty kicks to beat the Bears in last year’s quarterfinals, but they had Baldwin buried early Thursday.

Kapolei broke through in the 31st minute when Keo Ponce beat Baldwin keeper Kyson-Lee Kaiama on a penalty shot. Kalei Gallarde set up the score for the Hurricanes, drawing one of Baldwin’s 12 fouls in the half about 30 yards from the goal. He blasted his free kick into the wall, but Kapolei’s Caleb Gouveia hit the turf while trying to collect the rebound in the box and drew another foul. Ponce lined up for the penalty kick and booted a steamer directly over Kaiama’s head for the goal.

The Bears (11-4) were whistled for 20 fouls to Kapolei’s nine.

The Hurricanes scored their second goal when Rowen White hit Gouveia in stride from 60 yards in the 54th minute. Gouveia was clear of the defense after just one touch and grounded a shot past Kaiama from just inside the left corner of the box.

Michael Wolf joined the party 2 minutes later, putting a pass from Gallarde into the goal.

Wolf scored again in the 67th minute and had a chance at a hat trick 2 minutes later, but watched his shot sail over the goal.

‘Iolani 1, Kealakehe 0

The Raiders (9-1-2) are doing just enough to advance, beating the Waveriders (13-2-1) by a goal.

KJ Ahlo scored off a rebound in the rain in the 21st minute, and it was the only goal ‘Iolani needed. The Raiders made it to the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win over Aiea on Wednesday.

"It’s not an easy tournament," ‘Iolani coach Chris Lee said. "It’s the state tournament and everybody here is here for a reason."

Mililani 3, Pearl City 0

The Trojans (13-0-1) moved on to the semifinals with an easy win over the Chargers (11-5).

Tyler Matas opened the scoring with a goal in the 27th minute, followed by Jake Sagami in the 51st minute and Evan Wilson in the 80th minute. Mililani keeper Tyler Wilson made four saves. "This is an accomplishment," Mililani coach Jeff Yamamoto said. "That is a great team we just played against."

CONSOLATION

Aiea 3, Lahainaluna 2

Tayler Sonobe-Morita scored the tying and go-ahead goals as Na Alii (9-6-1) beat the Lunas (10-5-1).

Sonobe-Morita’s goals came in the 17th and 28th minutes and followed Lahainaluna’s opening score by Jonathan De La Paz in the seventh minute. Jae Won Huh scored for Aiea in the 58th minute and Jorge Hernandez put one in for the Lunas in the 63rd minute.

Waiakea 5, Moanalua 3

Nu‘ulaiti Aiawa had a hat trick with goals in the fifth, 52nd and 80th minutes to lead the Warriors (10-6-1) over Na Menehune (9-5-2).

Laurence Txakeeyang, Brett Rex and Alex Hoang scored for Na Menehune. Hajime Hayano and Cameron Boucher added goals for Waiakea.

DIVISION II

Honokaa 5, Castle 0

Joel Shoemaker-Hassey scored a pair of goals and the Dragons (17-0) dismantled the Knights (5-9).

Chayce Moniz (26th minute), Justin Warren (36th) and Clayton Robinson (45th) jumped in on the scoring action for Honokaa.

Mid-Pacific 1, Seabury Hall 0

Brandon Nakamura scored in the 71st minute to move the Owls (2-7-2) over the Spartans (4-9-2).

Mid-Pacific, the 2010 state champion, plays defending champion Honokaa in a semifinal pairing. The Owls earned their second shutout of the season and scored for the first time since Jan. 27 against Saint Louis.

Kapaa 2, Makua Lani 1, PKs

The Warriors (10-1-2) advanced with a 4-2 edge in penalty kicks to beat the Lions (9-8). TJ West scored for Kapaa in the 23rd minute and Elijah Lingenfelder forced overtime with a tally in the 70th minute.

Christian Liberty 3, Kahuku 2, PKs

Nakaiya Kerr, Seqouya Kerr, Louis Moylan and Ian Clark knocked in penalty kicks to help the Canefires (10-4-3) oust the Red Raiders (7-5-1).

Kahuku rebounded from a 2-0 deficit with goals by Kekau Aliuli in the 13th minute and Florian Stuendel in the 40th minute. Christian Liberty got both of its regulation goals in the first 3 minutes, with Keenan Freitas breaking through in the second minute and Moylan scoring in the third.

Stuendel and Peter Hyatt hit their PKs for Kahuku.
