A honeymooning visitor from Japan was killed and her husband was in critical condition after the motorcycle they were riding hit a guardrail just before 12:15 p.m. Friday near Crouching Lion in Kaaawa.
Police said the woman died after being transported to the Queen’s Medical Center. The man remains in critical condition.
A supervisor with the Department of Emergency Medical Services said that as the rented Harley-Davidson motorcycle approached the Crouching Lion area, it hit a guardrail near 51-666 Kamehameha Highway. The couple were not wearing helmets, the EMS supervisor said.
The rental company and the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii were contacted to help identify the victims and comfort next of kin, police said.
Jessica Lani Rich, VASH president and chief executive officer, said the couple, both 27, was honeymooning here and had brought family members with them.
About three hours after the crash, police reopened the northbound lanes of Kamehameha Highway that were closed during the investigation.
