The top-seeded Honokaa Dragons scored five second-half goals, including three in the game’s final 6 minutes, to defeat the Mid-Pacific Owls 5-1 in a Division II semifinal of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts/HHSAA Boys State Soccer Championships on Friday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park.
Honokaa (18-0) will play second-seeded Kapaa (11-1-2) for the title at 5 p.m. today at the park’s stadium.
The Warriors of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation defeated Christian Liberty 1-0 on Trevor McCracken’s goal in the 35th minute in the other D-II semifinal.
In the Dragons’ victory, Honokaa trailed 1-0 at halftime on a goal by Mid-Pacific’s John Hyland in the 25th minute.
But Justin Warren tied it at 1 with a goal in the 52nd minute and put the Dragons ahead 2-1 with another in the 60th minute.
Honokaa, champion of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, then ran away with it with goals from Valentino Quijano-Moeckel (74th minute), Robert Connors (77th) and Dylan Shiraki (80th).
Mid-Pacific (2-8-2) of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu plays Christian Liberty (9-5-3) of the BIIF at 1 p.m. today in the stadium for third place in Division II.
FIFTH-PLACE SEMIFINALS
Castle 1, Seabury Hall 0
Kyle Urasaki scored in the 17th minute and the Knights (6-9) held off the Spartans (4-10-2) to advance to the fifth-place game.
Castle will play fellow Oahu Interscholastic Association member Kahuku at 3 p.m. on field 9 today for fifth place in Division II.
Kahuku 3, Makua Lani 1
The Red Raiders (8-5-1) got two second-half goals to beat the Lions (9-9).
Makua Lani of the BIIF took an early lead on a goal by Elijah Lingendfelder in the eighth minute. But Gabriel Pinheiro-Alves tied the game just 2 minutes later and the game went into halftime tied at 1.
Kekahu Aluli’s goal in the 45th minute gave Kahuku a 2-1 lead and another goal by Aluli in the 56th minute made it 3-1.
