With both teams unable to get that clutch hit, Aaron Payne decided to end things on his own.
The Oregon sophomore stole third and scored on a wild pitch on the same play to give the Ducks a 3-2 victory over Hawaii in 12 innings on Saturday night at Les Murakami Stadium.
The Ducks (1-1) took their first lead of the series after 20 innings when Payne doubled with one out off UH reliever Patrick O’Rourke.
Payne took off for third on a 1-1 pitch that bounced in the dirt and got away from catcher Cody Clark long enough for him to score the winning run, much to the disappointment of a second straight sellout crowd of 3,415.
Hawaii (1-1) had its chances, leaving a runner in scoring position in six consecutive innings.

Oregon reliever Jimmie Sherfy was a big reason why, striking out 13 in 52⁄3 innings to earn the win.
"The story of the game was Sherfy and that slider he was throwing," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "You’ve got to credit him because he just dominated us."
A two-out single by Pi‘ikea Kitamura moved the tying run to third in the 12th. Sherfy walked Clark to load the bases and hit Kaeo Aliviado with a 2-2 pitch, but umpire Joe Burelson ruled Aliviado leaned into the pitch. Sherfy struck him out swinging on the next pitch to end the game.
"(The umpire) told me don’t stick my elbow in there, but I thought it was natural," Aliviado said. "It was bang-bang — everything happened so fast and I had another pitch but couldn’t do anything with it."
Hawaii left 16 men on base to Oregon’s eight.
Collin Bennett gave UH an early lead for the second straight night, driving in Aliviado with a two-out single in the third.
The Oregon defense unraveled, committing three straight errors, including two by new third baseman Thomas Walker. An errant pickoff throw by Ducks starter Jake Reed moved Bennett from first to third and Walker booted a grounder by Duval to score Bennett for a 2-0 UH lead.
The Ducks broke through in the sixth with three hits off Hawaii starter Jarrett Arakawa.
Ryon Healy and Shaun Chase led off with consecutive singles and Brett Hambright delivered a two-run double to center to tie the game at two-all.
Arakawa, who threw 85 pitches through 51⁄3 innings, was pulled for reliever David Longville after a four-pitch walk put runners on first and second.
Longville, a 6-foot-3 freshman making his UH debut, got pinch hitter Brett Thomas to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Arakawa allowed two runs on eight hits with two walks and four strikeouts.
Reed didn’t factor into the decision for the Ducks, leaving after allowing two runs — one earned — in six innings with three walks and four strikeouts.
Longville held the Ducks scoreless over 42⁄3 innings, allowing just three hits with no walks and three strikeouts.
O’Rourke took the loss, allowing the one run on two hits in two innings.
"I think we found a guy in David Longville who’s going to be pretty good for us," Trapasso said.
The series continues today at 1:05 p.m.
