The only thing better than a state championship is winning one while going unbeaten.
Honokaa repeated as the Division II state champion with a 1-0 win over Kapaa at the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts/HHSAA State Boys Soccer Championships on Saturday.
"It seemed like this one was harder," Honokaa coach Maurice Miranda said. "This team went undefeated — that is very difficult and it speaks to resilience. They just worked their butts off to get here."
The Dragons (19-0) didn’t score until the 72nd minute because the Warriors (11-2-2) elected to pack the box for the entire game and take its chances when it got a few runs. It got only five in the game, and keeper Maikai Coelho did not need to make a single save.
The Dragons, on the other hand, put 23 shots on goal and forced the Warriors to make four saves.
"Kapaa gave us everything we could handle," Honokaa coach Maurice Miranda said. "They play defense. We told the boys if they want to weather the storm, that’s fine, but we’re just going to keep coming. There’s no quit in these boys."
Valentino Quijano-Moeckel ended 71 minutes of scoreless soccer when the Dragons put a shot on goal that popped out of Kapaa keeper Shane Nishioka-Healy’s hands. Joel Shoemaker-Hassey corralled the rebound and got the ball to Quijano-Moeckel, who hit a crisp shot into the net.
"We knew it was coming," Quijano-Moeckel said. "We just needed to settle down and wait for the right ball to come across the goal. It was a total team effort."
Nishioka-Healy, one of two senior starters, came out of the game after giving up the goal.
"Nishioka played great," Miranda said. "I give him a lot of credit. We couldn’t crack him."
Honokaa beat Kapaa in the state tournament for the third straight year and completed an undefeated season while repeating as champion. The Dragons outscored opponents 11-1 in three games of this tournament. Still, Kapaa managed to keep it close.
"We did better than we expected," Kapaa coach Kevin Cram said. "We’re not pleased with the result. We wanted to win, of course. We strengthened the defense, kept them out for most of the game, but one deflection did it."
