Honolulu’s Michelle Wie ended her uneven performance at the Honda LPGA Thailand today with a final-round 73 to shoot a 1-over 289 in her opening event of 2012. Wie was tied for 35th with the leaders still on the course at press time.
World No. 1 Yani Tseng had a four-shot advantage over Jiyai Shin after seven holes. Tseng had back-to-back 65s in the second and third rounds to overcome her so-so 73 the opening day. By contrast, Wie had only one round in the 60s. She will remain in Asia to take part in next weekend’s LPGA event in Singapore.
The 22-year-old Punahou graduate had three birdies and four bogeys in today’s final 18 holes. For the tournament, she carded 14 bogeys and 13 birdies, trying to knock off the rust after being off nearly three months. Wie is expected to graduate from Stanford at the end of the second trimester in late March.
Perry’s red hot in Florida
Kenny Perry shot a 10-under 62 to break the Champions Tour’s 36-hole scoring record with an 18-under 126 total in the ACE Group Classic in Naples, Fla.
Perry broke the record of 17 under held by six players.
Perry made five birdies on the front nine and six more on the back.
First-round leader Larry Mize was three strokes back after a 67.
Kruger leads in India
South Africa’s Jbe Kruger shot a 6-under 66 in the third round of the Avantha Masters to take a one-shot lead in the European Tour event in New Delhi.
Kruger had two eagles and two birdies in his bogey-free round to finish at 11-under 205. Germany’s Marcel Siem (68), France’s Jean-Baptiste Gonnet (69) and Scotland’s Peter Whiteford (72) were tied for second.
