Wong’s book among finalists
"The Blue Tomato: The Inspirations Behind the Cuisine of Alan Wong," written by Wong with the help of Arnold Hiura, is one of three finalists in the 26th Annual International Association of Culinary Professionals Cookbook Awards, in the "Chefs & Restaurants" category.
Past honorees have included Rick Bayless, Mark Bittman, Thomas Keller and Julia Child.
An awards ceremony will take place April 2 in New York during the association’s conference.
"The Blue Tomato," Wong’s second cookbook, received the Ka Palapala Po‘okela Award of Excellence in Cookbooks locally.

Help prevent cancer via diet

Cooking class goes vegetarian
Explore using ingredients such as blueberries, leafy greens, flaxseed and legumes to support brain health at Castle Medical Center’s latest "Eat Well for Life" class on March 1.
Recipes and samples are provided during the vegetarian cooking class, which runs 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Wellness Center Auditorium.

Festival focuses on breadfruit
Ulu, or breadfruit, is the focus of the free Puna ‘Ulu Festival March 3. Festivities run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ho‘oulu Lahui, site of Kua o Ka La Public Charter School at Pualaa on Hawaii island.
The festival will feature a cooking contest, ulu poi pounding and local food made with ulu. There will also be presentations on the cultivation of ulu plants.
Chef Alan Okuda and the East Hawaii Community College Culinary Arts Program will prepare a buffet lunch, and charter school students will sell their ‘Ulu Tamales.
