Maui school band will play at Carnegie Hall
About 45 students from a Maui private school will play music at Carnegie Hall in New York next year.
St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School’s symphonic band has been invited to perform in the National Band and Orchestra Festival in April 2013.
Band Director Everett Yamashita told The Maui News he hasn’t finalized the program, but he expects the orchestra will play Gustav Holst’s "First Suite in E flat," among other selections.
Fundraising has already started — Yamashita estimates they’ll need to raise about $125,000.
2 charged in robbery and assault
A man and woman have been charged with robbery after a man was assaulted Monday in Puna on Hawaii island, police said.
The 32-year-old victim was standing outside a Pahoa restaurant at about 2:45 p.m. when a woman asked him for marijuana, police said. When the man said he didn’t have any, the woman hit him in the back of the head several times with her fist, causing him to drop his skateboard, and took cash from his pants pocket, police said. A man joined the attack, hitting the victim in the head with his fist and then striking the victim with the skateboard, knocking him unconscious, police said. The victim was taken to Hilo Medical Center with serious injuries.
Steven Stoesser, 32, of Pahoa was charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree assault. His bail was set at $50,000. Lisa Yurkovic, 35, was charged with first-degree robbery. Her bail was set at $50,000.
