SINGAPORE » Americans Katie Futcher and Angela Stanford and South Korea’s Jenny Shin all shot 1-under 71s today to stay tied for the lead after three rounds of the $1.4 million HSBC Women’s Champions.
Futcher led almost the entire day, jumping ahead with a birdie on the second hole. But a bogey on 18 — her first of the tournament — allowed Stanford and Shin to regain a share of the lead at 9-under 207.
Hawaii’s Michelle Wie improved on her dismal opening two rounds with a 3-over 75 that left her at 19 over for the tournament, which has no cut.
Wie moved up a spot to 59th only because two more players — Paula Creamer and Pat Hurst — withdrew.
World No. 1 Yani Tseng leapt up the leaderboard with a 5-under 67 and was three strokes off the lead at Tanah Merah Country Club.
China’s Shanshan Feng shot a 69 to be two shots behind the leaders while South Koreans Jiyai Shin and Na Yeon Choi were tied with Tseng three shots back.
Wie birdied a pair of par 3s, but that was more than offset by her five bogeys. Though the score was her best of the weekend and the bogeys were her fewest in any round at the event, only eight golfers had worse third rounds than she did.
In Friday’s second round, Futcher and Shin both had six birdies and one bogey to reach 8-under 136 and tie Stanford, who had a 70, on a day temperatures reached the low 90s.
