Scholar to discuss internment camps
Asian-American author Gary Y. Okihiro, professor of international and public affairs at Columbia University and founding director of Columbia’s Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race, is a University of Hawaii-West Oahu Visiting Scholar this spring. He is presenting a discussion called "Hora, Hora, Hora, Pearl Harbor, and Other Acts of Infamy" around town, including a public edition at 10:30 a.m. March 7 at the Kahala Nui retirement community, 4389 Malia St.
Born in Aiea, Okihiro received a doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles and has written 10 books about historical scholarship. "Hora, Hora, Hora" is focused on Hawaii during World War II, including what he calls "imprisonment camps." Okihiro also will deliver the talk at 5 p.m. Monday at UH-West Oahu and 4:30 p.m. March 13 at UH-Hilo.
Other free public talks by Okihiro include an address on labor migration at 9:20 a.m. Thursday at the UH-Manoa Center for Okinawan Studies’ Labor Migration Symposium in the Korean Studies Auditorium, and "Pineapple Culture" at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii.

Middle-schoolers to present kids play
The Kawananakoa Theatre Guild will perform "The Troll and the Elephant Prince" at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Prince David Kawananakoa Middle School, 49 Funchal St.
The play by Max Bush runs about an hour and is suitable for first-graders and older children.

Help care for pets during emergencies
The Hawaiian Humane Society is seeking candidates for its emergency shelter manager volunteer corps.
During emergencies the agency partners with the Red Cross to open pet shelters in conjunction with people shelters. In order to be prepared, the society is training staff and volunteers to learn the chain of command, deployment and animal care.
Training will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. March 10 at the Humane Society, 2700 Waialae Ave. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
