Laupahoehoe man identified as crash victim
Hawaii County police identified the man who died in a motorcycle crash Sunday as Dimitri I. Sheehan, 24, of Laupahoehoe.
Hilo police officers said Sheehan was speeding as he traveled toward Hilo on Kalanianaole Street near Leileiwi Beach Park shortly after 4 p.m. when he did a "wheelie" on his 2002 Honda motorcycle. The motorcycle ran off the right side of the road and hit a signpost about 200 feet east of Koloa Street.
Sheehan was thrown from the motorcycle. He was wearing a helmet but suffered severe internal injuries, police said. Fire rescue personnel took him to the Hilo Medical Center, where he died at 5:43 p.m.
Kauai warned of contaminated water after rain
Kauai residents are being advised to stay out of brown ocean waters, floodwaters and storm water runoff following Sunday’s heavy rain.
County officials said Monday there was a brown-water advisory for Kauai because of contamination from overflowing cesspools, sewer manholes, pesticides, animal fecal matter, dead animals, pathogens, chemicals and associated flood debris.
In Eleele on Sunday morning, overflowing rainwater led to a sewage spill of between 1,000 and 10,000 gallons from a manhole at Kaumualii Highway and Eleele Road.
County officials said rain washed sewage into waters in and around Kikiaola Harbor, the ditch between the harbor and Kaumualii Highway, and the area near the mouth of the Hanapepe River.
