Inaugural Hapalua offers $11,000 purse
A purse of $11,000, including $5,000 for the winner, is offered for the inaugural Hapalua Half Marathon, a 13.1-mile race on March 11.
Twenty-four elite local runners will compete in the handicap portion of the race. The 12 men and 12 women will have a head start — 18 minutes, 30 seconds for women, 9:30 for men — and then pursued by seven-time Honolulu Marathon champion Jimmy Muindi and two-time defending Honolulu Marathon winner Nicholas Chelimo.
The first "invited" runner across the Kapiolani Park finish line — pro or amateur — will receive $5,000. Other prize money ranges from $2,500 for second to $100 for 10th.
The race is open to all, with participants joining Muindi and Chelimo for the 6 a.m. start at the Duke Kahanamoku statue in Waikiki. The event also includes a 12.6-mile relay for teams of four to seven runners that starts at 7 a.m. The relay consists of seven laps around Kapiolani Park.
