Washington scores 44 in BYUH’s loss
Shayla Washington scored a school-record 44 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, but it came in a losing effort as Brigham Young-Hawaii dropped a 78-71 women’s basketball decision to Hawaii Pacific on Saturday in Laie.
Mana Hopkins led the winning Sea Warriors (18-10, 12-6 Pacific West Conference) with 22 points, while Paris Gravely added 19 points. Danna Lynn Hooper notched 10 points for the Seasiders (6-20, 5-13).
Brigham Young-Hawaii drops HPU men
Gary Satterwhite scored 21 points and Bracken Funk scored 19 as Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Hawaii Pacific 74-70 in men’s basketball Saturday night in Laie.
Funk also grabbed 11 rebounds for the Seasiders (17-10, 14-4 PacWest).
Kyle Allen scored 24 and LaBrent Chappell added 22 for the Sea Warriors (11-14, 6-11).
Hurley leads Vulcans to women’s victory
Hillary Hurley scored 22 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to power Hawaii-Hilo to a 64-44 women’s basketball win over Chaminade on Saturday at McCabe Gym.
Jameia McDuffie added 11 points for the Vulcans (14-12, 11-7 PacWest).
Jordan Ahakuelo scored 17 points to pace the Silverswords (1-23, 1-17).
Bailey leads Chaminade past UHH
Lee Bailey scored 30 points and Dominique Cooks added 24 to lead Chaminade to a 94-86 men’s basketball win over Hawaii-Hilo on Saturday night at McCabe Gym.
Bennie Murray chipped in with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Rickey Clayborn contributed with 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Silverswords (11-14, 9-9 PacWest).
Terrell Mack had 22 points for the Vulcans (9-17, 3-15).
HPU baseball team improves to 12-3
Jace Poole had four hits to lead Hawaii Pacific to an 11-7 baseball victory over Southern Utah on Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park.
Blake Amaral chipped in with three hits and three RBIs for the Sea Warriors (12-3).
Tariq Staton and Chaisson Low both had three hits for the Thunderbirds (2-8).
Hawaii-Hilo edges NDNU in softball
Amber Waracka pitched 62⁄3 innings of shutout relief to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 4-3 softball win over Notre Dame de Namur on Saturday at Old Airport Field in Kailua-Kona.
Emily Greene went 3-for-4 to lead the Vulcans (6-1).
Hillary Uekawa and Kayla Anderson both went 2-for-3 for the Argonauts (10-6).
UH women beat Iowa State in tennis
Hawaii won five out of six singles matches to beat Iowa State 5-1 in tennis on Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex.
Barbara Pinterova, Katarina Poljakova, Jamie Pawid, Martina Kostalova and Xenia Suworowa all picked up wins for the Rainbow Wahine.
Doubles matches were not played due to rain delays.
Wong, Nakama at QB Club meeting
Scott Wong and Wes Nakama are the guest speakers at Monday’s meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.
Wong is the head coach of the University of Hawaii’s new sand volleyball team.
Nakama is the assistant director of information for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association.
The luncheon meeting is at the Maple Garden restaurant at 909 Isenberg St. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m., with the program starting at noon. The cost is $15 and the public is invited.
