Burglary suspect found hiding in church
Officers investigating a break-in at a Wahiawa church caught a suspect hiding in a room at the church with burglary tools Monday, police said.
Officers went to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church on California Avenue at about 5 p.m. When they arrived, they found evidence of a forced entry, and a search of the church led to the suspect, a 42-year-old man with no local address, hiding in a room, police said. Officers arrested the man on suspicion of second-degree burglary.
Driver to go to trial in fatal freeway crash
A 20-year-old Waipahu man, charged with manslaughter in the death of a 20-year-old man in an alleged drunken freeway crash last year, is scheduled to go to trial April 30 in Circuit Court.
Kyer Valeros, who is free on $50,000 bail, entered a plea of not guilty Thursday at his Circuit Court arraignment before Judge Richard Perkins.
Police said Valeros was drunk when he flipped the minivan he was driving on Feb. 4, 2011. He is charged with manslaughter in the death of Ervin Yanuara, 20, of Waipahu, and second-degree assault for injuries to one passenger.
A prosecutor said Valeros drank at least six beers and 10 shots of liquor before getting behind the wheel of a Toyota Sienna van and driving toward Honolulu when the vehicle hit an embankment on the H-1 freeway in Aiea, flipped several times and came to rest under the Kaonohi Street overpass. The prosecutor said police estimate the van was traveling 90 mph when it hit the embankment. Valeros’ blood alcohol content was 0.17, more than twice the legal threshold for drunken driving, authorities said.
