HSJGA vice president Cathy Torchiana, a member of the National Golf Coaches Association Hall of Fame, will narrate. Juniors attending get a $20 discount on the Ping College Golf Guide.
Registration is open on the HSJGA website (hsjga.org). The workshop is being held in conjunction with the Rainbow Wahine’s Anuenue Spring Break Classic at Kapalua.
Surprising Four-Ball finish
Sunday’s finish to the Hawaii State Golf Association Four-Ball Championship was as surprising as the Ted Makalena Golf Course managing to avoid all the rain that hit the state over the weekend.
Kamehemeha sophomore Donny Hopoi chipped in on the first playoff hole as he and Jared Flores, a sophomore at Moanalua, successfully defended their title. They held off Seungjae Maeng and John Oda, Flores’ Na Menehune teammates. They fired a 10-under-par 61 — 29 on the front — in the final round to catch them.
“I’d seen three chips already,” Hopoi said about the sudden-victory playoff. “I’m sure pretty much anybody could have done it. It was a pretty simple chip. I was confident on that hole. It felt like a normal day. We always practice together.”
Hopoi and Flores opened with a 62 Saturday and both teams finished at 14-under 128, the lowest score since Bryan Edwards and Junior Agpaoa won with 127 in 2008. A year earlier, Tadd Fujikawa and Chan Kim won with 128.
Lyle Kawamata and Alan Arakawa captured A Flight this year at 73—142. There were co-champs in B Flight, with Dennis Onaga and Donn Suzuki (72), and Allan Kuaana and Fred Denault (70) both finishing at 140.
