STANFORD, Calif. » Outside hitter J.P. Marks knew he needed to find the motivation to be a big factor for the Hawaii men’s volleyball team. So he turned to videos of Brazil’s Murilo Endres. After watching videos of Endres on Tuesday, Marks came up with a career-high 18 kills on Wednesday, helping to lead the Warriors to a 20-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-23 win over No. 3 Stanford at Roscoe Maples Pavilion.
“It kind of gave me that big motivation to be that guy one day,” said the freshman from Schwerin, Germany. “Technically, I try to copy him.”
Added senior outside hitter Steven Hunt, “We expect that from him every day. He just went off and played great. He just kept swinging. He got blocked a couple of times, but he was right back at it the next set. Swinging, putting the ball down, he was bouncing balls all over the place.”
More importantly, the Warriors finally got that breakthrough win they had been craving. Now, the question is can Hawaii make it a turnaround victory in what up until now had been a season of struggles.
“I hope so,” Hunt said. “It’s my last year. I hope we turn it around right now and make playoffs. We’ve got BYU next week so it’s right back at it.”
The win snapped a seven-match losing streak in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play — the only interruption was a pair of exhibition wins over Nittaidai of Japan. The losing streak tied for the longest in school history.
“That was huge for us, just not being that team (to set a new record),” Marks said.
Coach Charlie Wade said that a lot of video study by the coaching staff after Tuesday’s loss to the Cardinal played a role in the win.
“We’re the team in the league that plays these back-to-back nights,” Wade said. “You have an opportunity to watch film. We had two different film sessions today.”
The video from Tuesday’s match showed a team that suffered several breakdowns.
“We passed a lot better,” Wade said of Wednesday’s match. “We talked about just being mindful of the basics, the very simple stuff and let’s take care of that first. Manage your serving efficiency, recognize the situation and do your basic stuff well.”
The Warriors (7-12, 4-10 MPSF) did just that. In fact, throw out Marks’ seven service errors in 21 attempts, and Hawaii made just four errors in 73 attempts (.945).
“You take his seven errors out, we served really, really good,” Wade said.
One of the keys for the Warriors was defense. Stanford (14-5, 11-4) hit just .288 for the match. The Cardinal committed 17 of its 19 errors in the final three sets.
“In our league, against these caliber teams, the difference in every set is really close,” Wade said. “It’s one or two points. If we can start picking up on some tendencies and you’re able to key in on certain points, that’s the difference. And tonight we were able to execute in some key situations.”
