City again clears Occupy site
The city Department of Facility Maintenance conducted a 3 a.m. sweep of the Occupy Honolulu tents Wednesday at Thomas Square, the fifth such action.
The city conducted its first enforcement Feb. 1 and had three follow-ups before Wednesday.
The early-morning sweep was in response to public complaints and a follow-up of earlier enforcement actions, the city said.
After providing written notices on Monday that the items could not remain on public property, the city impounded four tents and a cabinet, the city said.
Kuhio Highway traffic to return to two ways
Kauai County officials expect to restore two-way traffic on Kuhio Highway near Kilauea by Wednesday, when road repairs are complete.
The county detoured traffic along Kolo and Pili roads March 5 after heavy rain washed away part of the highway’s foundation.
Traffic was shifted after a 15-foot-wide culvert running beneath the highway about 1,000 feet east of the Pili Road junction partially collapsed, the county said.
A detour linking Kuhio Highway to Kolo Road will be removed. Repairs will continue in the areas next to Kuhio Highway through early May, weather permitting, officials said.
Notice for lane closings can be found at hawaii.gov/dot/highways/roadwork/kauai.
Police panel gives chief high marks
The Maui Police Commission gave Police Chief Gary Yabuta high marks in all areas, the commission announced Tuesday.
The commission completed its annual evaluation on Feb. 21 for the 12 months that ended in November.
Yabuta performed well in department accreditation, community relations through the department’s Town Hall Outreach Program, recruiting and officer training, and development of a new Kihei substation.
Yabuta joined the police department in 1983 and was named chief in June 2009.
