A 34-year-old fugitive recaptured Friday appeared in Honolulu District Court on Monday on charges of first-degree attempted murder for allegedly trying to run over two police officers during his arrest.
Kenneth Wong is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Wednesday and is being held in lieu of $150,000 bail. He is also charged with one count each of auto theft and drug possession, and two of resisting arrest.
Police said Wong tried to escape from authorities four times this month and was successful twice.
But police finally cornered him Friday in Punaluu.
According to CrimeStoppers, police said Wong fled on foot from officers after a March 3 traffic accident in Makiki involving a stolen van.
On March 6 he jumped from a three-story building in Makiki in trying to evade police and then fled from the Queen’s Medical Center while being treated for his injuries, CrimeStoppers said.
On Friday morning police found Wong sitting in his girlfriend’s vehicle at her home at 53-224 Kamehameha Highway. When an officer told him to get out, Wong climbed into the driver’s seat and drove off, nearly hitting the officer, police said. Wong drove to the other end of the property, but another vehicle blocked the exit.
A second officer approached Wong from the driver’s side and was almost hit as Wong drove the vehicle in reverse, police said. The vehicle ended up in a ditch, and officers arrested Wong at 9:10 a.m. after a brief scuffle.
His 28-year-old girlfriend was also arrested for hindering prosecution and an earlier arrest warrant.
