Chang named Division II All-American
Brigham Young-Hawaii senior guard Jet Chang was named to the Basketball Times All-America First Team for NCAA Division II on Monday.
Chang was the only player from the Pacific West Conference named to any of the teams by the magazine.
Chang led the PacWest in scoring this season (17.8 points per game) and was fifth in steals (1.6).
Earlier this month, Chang was named to the first team of both the Daktronics West Region and the NABC West Region.
BASEBALL
UHH splits with Dixie State on the road
Hawaii-Hilo turned three singles and three hit batsmen into a five-run ninth, and the Vulcans snapped a 14-game losing streak to defeat Dixie State 8-7 in the first game of Monday’s PacWest baseball doubleheader in St. George, Utah.
The Red Storm (15-8, 11-5) came back to win 4-1 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Vulcans (5-20, 2-14) scored all of their runs in the final three innings, closing to 5-3 in the top of the seventh. Dixie State scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, but stranded the tying run at third when Vulcans reliever Bryan Raines got Colton Yack to fly out to left.
SOFTBALL
Hawaii Pacific sweeps Academy of Art
Celina Garces’ two-run single highlighted a nine-run first inning and Hawaii Pacific held on for a 13-10 victory over Academy of Art in the second game of Monday’s PacWest softball doubleheader at Howard Okita Field.
In the opener, the Sea Warriors shut out the Urban Knights 6-0 on Breanne Patton’s three-hitter. HPU got all the runs it needed when Keila Elderts scored with two outs in the first on an error.
Nicole Marrow drove in five runs for HPU (17-5, 11-1), three on a bases-loaded double in the third. The game was stopped after six innings due to darkness.
The Urban Knights are (9-20, 5-9).
Pires and Patton earn weekly honors
Hawaii Pacific junior Caira Pires was named the player of the week and Sea Warriors senior Breanne Patton pitcher of the week in softball.
Pires, a Kalaheo High graduate, led HPU to a 5-1 record last week, 4-0 in conference play. She hit .438 (7-for-16) with two triples, a home run, seven RBIs and four runs scored.
Patton, out of Campbell High, was 4-0 with a 0.57 ERA over 221⁄3 innings. She gave up five earned runs, with three walks and 11 strikeouts.
