You think it’s easy dancing around a whole game?
Two-four-six-eight! Who do we appreciate!?!
How ’bout the University of Hawaii cheerleaders?
Perhaps the most unheralded athletes at any school or professional sports organization, cheerleaders do a lot more than just look good and boost player and fan morale. They actually are hard-working athletes themselves, capable of impressive feats and possessing amazing stamina.
So it’s quite an honor that UH cheerleaders George McGuire and Azaria Bermudez finished first on Monday in the USA Collegiate Partner Stunt Championship in Anaheim, Calif. The pair scored 91.76 points out of 100 for their cheerleading skills such as choreography, execution, showmanship and overall impression.
Placing second in the two-day event were David Gilles and Stephanie Hentschel, also of UH, who trailed closely with 91.34 points.
Another Hawaii native wins in Illinois
Another Hawaii-born politician, transplanted to Illinois, comes out ahead, at least for now. Tammy Duckworth, 43, easily won her Democratic primary on Tuesday, seeking election to represent the state’s 8th District in Congress. Come November, she will face outspoken conservative U.S. Rep. Joe Walsh.
Unlike the current president, though, she is a product of public schools — McKinley High School and the University of Hawaii, to be exact.
The Iraq War veteran unquestionably will be busy with the campaign. But she still has cause to return to her birthplace now and then: Her mother lives in Mililani.
