Pavilions slated for Punchbowl
The Army Corps of Engineers is awarding an Aiea company a $4 million contract to build two Vietnam War pavilions at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl.
Innovative-Mira Joint Venture will build two pavilions next to two existing flagpoles flanking the processional stairs of the Honolulu Memorial.
One pavilion will include Vietnam War battle maps complementing existing World War II and Korean War battle maps. The other pavilion will serve as an orientation center.
The corps said Wednesday the architectural style of the new structures will be consistent with existing map gallery pavilions.
Fung Associates Inc. of Honolulu is the lead architect and designer for the project. Construction is expected to be finished by November.
Measure to lift cap on hostess bars wins OK
WAILUKU » Maui’s Liquor Control Commission has approved a recommendation to lift the cap on the number of hostess bars in the county.
The county has reached its limit of 12 hostess bars, which are in Wailuku and Kahului. In hostess bars, employees sit with and entertain patrons.
The cap went into effect in the 1990s, when the county had a policy of no more than five hostess bars.
The Maui News reported Friday the rule amendment lifting the cap is expected to be forwarded to Mayor Alan Arakawa for final action.
The Liquor Department says it received letters asking for the cap to be lifted, citing reasons including free enterprise and the county’s increased population.
County spokesman Rod Antone says Arakawa will look at it when it crosses his desk.
