Two landmark performances helped the University of Hawaii softball team shake off a stunning loss on Saturday and claim a series win against San Jose State.
A late-inning home run lifted the visiting Spartans to a 4-2 upset of the 17th-ranked Rainbow Wahine in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
UH pitcher Stephanie Ricketts then threw a six-inning no-hitter and Kelly Majam broke the program’s career home run record as the Wahine responded with an 8-0 win to conclude the Western Athletic Conference series.
Ricketts’ fifth no-hitter of her career came with her parents, Carol and Jeff, in the stands at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium and helped the Wahine avoid a costly series loss to open the WAC season.
“I feel like whenever they come it’s good luck,” said Ricketts, who struck out five and walked three in the win. “The last time my dad came, that’s when we beat Florida State. It’s nice to hear a familiar voice, because I heard him the whole game. It’s cool.”
After going hitless in the first two games of the series, Majam went 3-for-3 in the finale and hit her 45th career home run in the bottom of the second, breaking a tie with Kate Robinson for the all-time record.
“I never was a home-run hitter,” Majam said. “In high school I was just looking to hit line drives, I was never really the No. 4 batter on any team. So this is weird but an awesome feeling. It’s great to know I’ve worked hard and it’s paying off.”
Majam’s production at the top of the order in the decisive game of the series set the tone for a UH offense that had struggled against San Jose State ace Amanda Pridmore through two games.
Pridmore took a 4-1 loss on Friday despite throwing a one-hitter and rebounded by holding UH to two hits while striking out 10 in earning the win in Saturday’s opener.
Pridmore gave up a two-run home run to Sarah Robinson in the third inning, but shut out the Wahine the rest of the way.
UH left-hander Kaia Parnaby had thrown 282⁄3 consecutive scoreless innings when SJSU designated player Breanna Lopez launched a three-run homer to left field in the top of the sixth inning. The Spartans added an insurance run in the seventh and the Wahine couldn’t muster a rally.
They regrouped between games with associate head coach Dee Wisneski providing some inspiration.
“Coach Dee definitely told us this is not who we are,” Majam said. “This isn’t the team that’s ranked 17th in the nation.”
With Pridmore in the circle for her third start of the series, Majam singled to lead off a two-run first inning, and her solo home run to center field in the second gave UH a 3-0 lead.
“It definitely felt good just to make solid contact. That’s what I’ve been trying to do — just hit the ball hard,” said Majam, who delivered an RBI double in a four-run rally in the third inning.
Ricketts (16-2) took care of the rest in completing UH’s second no-hitter of the season.
“(The loss) kind of fired me up a little,” Ricketts said. “I was a little angry.”
The Wahine closed a 17-game homestand at 26-3 overall and 2-1 in WAC play.
UH next embarks on an eight-game road trip bookended by WAC series at New Mexico State and Brigham Young.
“This is good for us, because this will relax them,” UH head coach Bob Coolen said of closing the series on an upswing. “If we had dropped two games we would have been in an urgent state because that’s not what we wanted to do.”
