Even the Disney organization is taking note of this weekend’s annual Hawaiian Scottish Festival. Disney’s new Pixar film "Brave," set in the medieval Scottish highlands, opens in June and, accordingly, the entertainment company is stocking the children’s tent at the festival with "Brave"-themed arts and crafts activities.
The two-day festival also features Mythica, a Celtic music band out of Colorado, in addition to the usual homegrown Scots music and crafts.

First held 31 years ago, the Hawaiian Scottish Festival runs Saturday and Sunday at Kapiolani Park. It is organized by the Hawaiian Scottish Association, which includes The Caledonian Society of Hawai’i, the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society of Hawai’i and the Celtic Pipes & Drums of Hawai’i.
Held to share Scottish culture with Hawaii residents and visitors, the festival includes live music and spirited dancing, games such as caber-tossing and a highland dance competition among artists from Hawaii, the mainland, Scotland, Australia and Canada. Attendees can also enjoy Celtic-themed products and food, plus family "clan" tables to trace one’s Scottish ancestry.
Local performers include Hawaii’s Celtic Pipes & Drums, the Isle of Maui pipe band, the Royal Hawaiian Band, Celtic Waves, fiddler Lisa Gomes, Irish Dance Hawai’i, and the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society. Several hula halau also will perform: Joan S. Lindsey Hula Studio, Na Wahine O Ka Uluwehi Ola and Halau Ka Pa Hula O Ka Lei Hulu Hiwi.
And it wouldn’t be Scottish without the martial arts on display, with full-contact medieval combat played out by the Musketeer Fencers and the Society for Creative Anachronism.
Today, a "Taste of Scotland" Ceilidh (party) will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Willows restaurant. Guests can sample Scots food and drink as musicians and dancers perform.
Ceilidh is $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Tickets available through the Willows; call 952-9200.
