Kalihi man bites police officer
A Honolulu police officer, trying to separate a fighting couple, was bitten on the face Wednesday afternoon in Kalihi, police said.
The incident happened at about 4:30 p.m. in the 600 block of North King Street. Police said the officer was trying to separate a 32-year-old Kalihi man and his girlfriend, who were arguing, when the man grabbed the officer’s arm and bit him on the face.
Both the police officer and suspect were taken to the hospital, where they received treatment.
Police arrested the suspect for assault of a law enforcement officer.
Alleged gunman is prison guard
A 49-year-old man who allegedly fired gunshots from his Pearl City home that led to the two-hour closure of the only access to Pacific Palisades Wednesday night is a Waiawa Correctional Facility guard.
Police arrested the man, who lives at a house at 1858 Waimano Home Road, on suspicion of reckless endangering.
A Department of Public Safety spokeswoman confirmed that the suspect is an adult corrections officer and a lieutenant at the minimum-security facility. He was hired by the Department of Public Safety in 1998. She said the department has opened its own investigation because of the arrest, but the man hasn’t been put on leave because he hasn’t been charged.
Police responding to reports of gunshots coming from the house closed Komo Mai Drive, the lone access to Pacific Palisades, and another nearby intersection for more than two hours after arresting the suspect and searching the neighborhood.
