Hawaii quarterback Cayman Shutter faces a possible suspension after being arrested Thursday morning for suspicion of drunken driving.
Police said the Kailua resident, driving a gray Scion, was speeding and weaving on the H-1 freeway westbound, left the freeway and continued to drive erratically before officers stopped him on Piikoi Street. He was arrested at 3:15 a.m. without incident and released at 4:30 a.m. after posting $500 bail.
Head coach Norm Chow is in China through Sunday. But in a news release from the school, Chow said: "We are aware of the incident involving one of our student-athletes. We are in the process of gathering all the facts. We have a code of conduct which our student-athletes are to adhere to and we expect them to represent both the university and football program to its highest integrity. We will make a follow-up statement at a later date after we gather all of the information."
In the past, UH has suspended players arrested for accusations of "major misconduct," defined by the school as "violations of the laws."
According to the UH handbook for student-athletes, such suspensions are not imposed as prejudgments but "prescribed in order to protect your team from the negative media attention which is inevitably attached to this type of situation."
The Warriors resume spring practice on Tuesday. Shutter, who will be a junior in the fall, is considered the Warriors’ No. 2 quarterback behind David Graves.
