UH’s top sand volleyball tandem goes 8-0
The University of Hawaii tandem of Emily Hartong and Elizabeth Ka‘aihue Stoltzman posted an 8-0 record in eight sets of pool play Saturday at the North Florida Sand Volleyball Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla.
Jane Croson and Ashley Lee, UH’s No. 2 pairing, was 6-0 in the weather-troubled event, while the No. 3 team of Alex Griffiths and Monica Stauber was 5-3.
Also for UH, Larissa Nordyke and Mita Uiato were 1-5 and Jade Vorster and Courtney Lelepali 2-4. Both tandems will complete pool play today.
Teams will be divided into gold, silver and bronze brackets today following the completion of pool play.
Hawaii-Hilo edges Academy of Art
Jordan Murai’s hit to left in the ninth inning scored two runs to break a tie and give Hawaii-Hilo a 4-2 victory over Academy of Art in Pacific West Conference baseball on Saturday in San Francisco.
The Vulcans improved to 7-27 overall and 4-21 in the conference, while the Urban Knights dropped to 2-27 and 2-19.
Grand Canyon sweeps HPU in baseball
Grand Canyon took two games from Hawaii Pacific in a baseball doubleheader Saturday in Phoenix.
The Antelopes won by scores of 4-1 and 7-3.
Michael Pomeroy went 5-for-8 in the two games for the Antelopes (19-16, 16-12 Pacific West Conference).
Michael Murray was the tough-luck loser for the Sea Warriors (18-12, 10-10) in the first game. He gave up just five hits in eight innings.
HPU, UHH, Chaminade tumble at tourney
No. 20-ranked UC San Diego (27-13) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh before a 3-hour weather delay to beat Hawaii Pacific (23-14) 3-2 in the Tournament of Champions presented by Mizuno softball tournament Saturday in Turlock, Calif.
In a later game, Cal State East Bay topped HPU 6-4.
At the same tournament, Samantha Lipperd tossed a no-hitter, striking out 13, as Sonoma State (23-14) dominated Hawaii-Hilo (15-15) 4-0.
Also at the Tournament of Champions, Dixie State routed Chaminade 11-2.
Hawaii Pacific beats UC Davis in tennis
Hawaii Pacific men’s tennis team won four of six singles matches Saturday en route to a 6-3 victory over UC Davis at the University of Hawaii courts.
In the women’s match, UC Davis dropped Hawaii Pacific 4-3 to break the Sea Warriors’ seven-match winning streak.
