Even before the first pitch of the 2012 season, it was evident this year’s Hawaii baseball team would need a collective effort on a daily basis to be a successful bunch.
On Sunday, every Rainbow who saw the field made some type of positive impact.
All nine offensive starters either scored or drove in a run, and freshmen Lawrence Chew and Kyle Dowdy combined for a performance worthy of a staff ace, holding UC Davis to two hits in UH’s 7-1 victory at Les Murakami Stadium.
Losers of a season-high five in a row just 72 hours earlier, Hawaii (17-12) closed out its fourth series win of the year in impressive fashion, much to the delight of a crowd of 1,538.
"It was a team win for us and a big win on Sunday, being Sunday tough to win the series and get ourselves playing well at the right time," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said.
There isn’t a better time for UH to feel good about itself, with Fresno State visiting this week for the final regular-season Western Athletic Conference series between the two rivals.
The Bulldogs have won five of the past six WAC tournaments, losing only to UH in 2010.
"I know of the rivalry and this is pretty much the last year we get to do it because we’re moving conferences," freshman Stephen Ventimilia said. "It would be nice to go out on top."
Ventimilia had three hits for the second straight game as UH beat the Aggies (11-13) in what will be a yearly series beginning next season in the Big West Conference.
Pi‘ikea Kitamura went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Kaeo Aliviado delivered an RBI single to extend his hitting streak to six games.
UC Davis scored first before Hawaii put up seven unanswered runs to win for just the fourth time in 14 games when its opponent scores first.
"We bounced back from Thursday by playing our own game and just having fun," said Aliviado, who singled in the go-ahead run in the fifth inning. "We executed our bunts, did our work and played well."
Aliviado played a big part in that, hitting second behind Ventimilia for the second game in a row.
He’s only 2-for-8 according to the box score, but has dropped down three successful sacrifice bunts, allowing Ventimilia to score four times in two games.
"I just want to accept that role and execute for my team and get that ‘W’," Aliviado said.
Hawaii piled it on late, scoring in each of the final four innings it came to bat to win by its third-largest margin of the season.
Billy Nottingham was the only Rainbow to score twice, reaching base on two walks in his second start of the year at catcher.
The seven runs were the most by UH in 20 games and more than enough support for Chew (2-1), who earned the second win of his young career.
The left-hander from Mid-Pacific gave up both hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Ryan Allgrove tagged him for the Aggies’ only run on a two-out single in the third inning to score John Williams, who reached base on a throwing error.
"I mainly just used my fastball today," said Chew, who also benefited from three UH double plays. "I kind of got behind most of the batters, but fought back and got a lot of balls in play that my defense did a good job on."
Dowdy finished off the game with three hitless innings in relief to earn his second save.
With the win, the Rainbows can now turn their focus toward their 33rd and final WAC season.
Hawaii, which went 17-7 and won a share of the regular-season title last year, will host the Bulldogs for the first of three on Thursday.
The WAC will play three-game series this year instead of four, lowering the number of regular-season games by six to 18.
