UH coed sailors earn national honor
University of Hawaii sailors Adam Pokras and Cienna Patmont were named US Sailing College Coed Sailors of the Week after leading the Rainbows to victory at the St. Francis Interconference Regatta at San Francisco.
Pokras, a sophomore, and Patmont, a senior, scored 42 points in the A division to help UH win the regatta for the first time in nine years.
It was the first time UH sailors have earned the honor.
Florence, Patacchia fall short in Australia
Hawaii’s John John Florence was eliminated in the fifth round and Fred Patacchia was ousted in the third round Thursday at the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach surf contest in Australia.
Florence beat Australia’s Matt Wilkinson 13.97-9.63 in the third round; finished second among three surfers in his fourth-round heat with a 15.00; and was edged by France’s Jeremy Flores 14.93-14.90 in the fifth round.
Patacchia lost to Austalia’s Joel Parkinson 18.94-17.37 in the third round.
Florence and Patacchia both are from the North Shore.
In the final, Australia’s Mick Fanning beat Kelly Slater of the United States 18.80-18.07.
