Les Loo has been around baseball a long time, and the game still finds ways to surprise him.
The Roosevelt coach saw his team tie Kailua with a dramatic seventh-inning rally, only to have the inning — and the game — apparently end with a player being called out for an equipment violation, thus negating the tying run and giving the host Surfriders a 6-5 win on Friday.
“This is very unusual. I’ve coached for over 30 years and I’ve never seen it end like that,” Loo said with a laugh. “It never fails to come up with something you’ve never seen before.”
Only thing is, the OIA Red East game isn’t over after all.
After a discussion with the home plate umpire, Loo was told OIA rules officials would provide a decision on whether the tying run should have been allowed. Later Friday night, OIA baseball coordinator Glenn Nitta said the umpires were in error in calling the runner out and the game was suspended in the top of the seventh with the teams tied 6-6.
The Rough Riders and Surfriders will complete the game before today’s regularly scheduled rematch at Stevenson Field set for 11 a.m.
Nitta said the player should have been ejected and replaced rather than called out and informed both Loo and Kailua coach Corey Ishigo of the decision.
The bizarre sequence began with Kailua taking a 6-3 lead into the top of the seventh inning.
Kailua relief pitcher Jacob Cobb-Adams opened the inning by getting a flyout to center field and a pop-up to first base. Roosevelt’s Brandon Ikeda was down to his last strike but worked the count full and kept the Rough Riders alive with an infield single.
Tyris Tominaga also fell behind the count, fouled off a two-strike pitch then doubled into the left-center gap to score courtesy runner Dustin Tsukano. Pinch hitter Michael Matsuoka followed with another double into the left-field corner to cut the Kailua lead to 6-5.
A wild pitch to Roosevelt designated hitter Mikaele Caris moved Matsuoka to third, representing the tying run. On a 3-1 pitch, the ball went into the dirt and to the backstop and Matsuoka crossed the plate while Caris went to first.
Ishigo went out to talk to the umpires and after a conference, Caris was called out for wearing an energy bracelet, which is considered a piece of jewelry.
“They warn us before the game and they warn us before the season, and I didn’t know that was jewelry. That’s my fault too,” Loo conceded.
With the out, Matsuoka’s run was disallowed, seemingly ending the game.
But the Roosevelt coaches asked whether Caris should have been ejected rather than called out and whether the run should have been allowed since the ruling was made after he had reached first base.
The OIA officials later agreed the ruling should have been an ejection after being awarded first base. So the game will resume with two out in the top of the seventh with a Roosevelt runner at first. Caris will have to sit out the next game, the result of any ejection.
While the outcome was still hazy, Loo saw promise in the Rough Riders’ comeback after entering the game at 3-5 in league play.
“It’s a credit to the players,” he said. “They never give up.”
Ikeda, Roosevelt’s starting pitcher, gave the Rough Riders a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the top of the first and held Kailua in check until the Surfriders rallied for five runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Wyatt D’Allesio ignited the Kailua offense with a bunt single and Kila Zuttermeister followed with a double. Three Roosevelt errors contributed to Kailua’s outburst, which was capped when two runs scored on Kea Vierra’s two-out infield single with the bases loaded.
Roosevelt answered with two runs in the fifth and Eli Davidann’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning scored Kailua’s sixth run.
“We haven’t been hitting like usual,” Ishigo said. “Our pitching has been better this year than in years past, our hitting will come around.”
