The Hawaii volleyball team failed to weather its own inconsistency in a 25-21, 25-13, 28-26 loss to UC Santa Barbara before 346 in the Thunderdome on Friday night.
The Warriors need to win tonight’s rematch to avoid finishing in last place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
The Warriors enter their regular-season finale at 7-19 overall and 4-17 in the MPSF.
The Gauchos are 6-17 and 4-15. The Gauchos conclude their regular season with two matches next week.
Outside hitters Miles Evans and Kevin Donohue each had 11 kills to lead the Gauchos.
Donohue served six points in a row during a 7-0 run to boost the Gauchos from a 5-all tie to a 12-5 lead in the second set. Donohue finished with three aces.
Evans finished off the match with a solo block of Harrison Carroll’s spike in the third set.
The Warriors, who have lost 14 of their past 15 matches, opened with Scott Hartley as a left-side hitter in place of J.P. Marks. Hartley had one kill and four errors in 10 swings. Five UH players had negative hitting percentages.
UH’s bright spots were outside hitter Steven Hunt, who buried a team-high 10 kills on 28 swings. With the other Warriors struggling offensively, Hunt often faced double and triple blocks.
UH middle blocker Nick West had five kills and hit .300. West also contributed to seven of the UH blocks.
But that was not enough to overcome inaccurate spikes. The UH outside hitters combined to relinquish 24 points on attack errors.
In the third set, the Warriors surged from a 16-9 deficit to force extra play. It was tied at 24, 25 and 26 before UH outside hitter Brook Sedore hit long and Carroll’s spike was rejected by Miles.
