Say no to Styrofoam.
That’s the goal of the "Foam Free Hawaii" campaign started by local solar energy firm Sunetric to discourage Hawaii restaurants from using foam packaging.
The company is helping promote local restaurants that don’t use foam containers, and is asking consumers to steer their business toward such businesses.
Sunetric is providing foam-free restaurants with stickers reading, "This restaurant is proud to be styrofoam free." Sunetric is also maintaining a website to list participating restaurants.
The website, sunetric.com/nofoam, includes a list of 45 restaurants and is accepting suggestions for expanding the list. National restaurant chains aren’t being included in an effort to "keep it local," the company said.
Sunetric on the site asks, "Why do we continue to allow our local restaurants and eateries to serve us food in Styrofoam containers? It’s indisputably horrible for the environment, ultimately bad for us, and ugly to boot. Demand that the restaurants you visit use recyclable containers or don’t go to that restaurant."
