2 more labor unions back Caldwell for Honolulu mayor
Kirk Caldwell has picked up two more endorsements in his campaign for Honolulu mayor.
Laborers’ International Union Local 368 and the Operating Engineers Local Union 3 on Tuesday announced their endorsement of the former city managing director over incumbent Peter Carlisle and former Gov. Ben Cayetano.
The laborers union represents about 5,000 Hawaii workers in the construction industry, while the engineers union has about 3,000 members working as heavy equipment operators and construction workers but also public employees, such as maintenance workers.
"We know that Kirk Caldwell will serve our industry and communities well," Pane Meatoga, district representative for the engineers local, said in a news release.
Caldwell has received all of the union endorsements so far in the race, including those of the Hawaii Government Employees Association, the United Public Workers, the State of Hawaii Organization of Police Officers, the Hawaii Fire Fighters Association and various other, smaller labor groups.
Work will shut water service in Puhi, Lihue
The Kauai County Department of Water has scheduled a water outage in Puhi and portions of Lihue from 9 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday to allow workers to connect a new waterline to the existing water system.
The new line is part of the Kaumualii Highway widening project.
Customers in Puhi and portions of Lihue will either experience no water or low water pressure, the agency said.
A detailed map of affected streets is at www.kauaiwater.org.
After service is restored, customers are advised to open an outside hose bib and check whether their water is clean. If dirty water is visible, they should flush water through the hose bib until the water is clean before opening any faucet inside their home or business. It is possible that sediment in the waterline will be disturbed during the connection process.
For more information, call the Department of Water at 245-5461 during business hours.
