Cartwright celebration set for Tuesday
The Friends of Alexander Joy Cartwright Jr. will celebrate his 192nd birthday on Tuesday at Oahu Cemetery, located at the corner of Nuuanu Avenue and Judd Street.
Cartwright is credited with creating many of baseball’s rules: game played on a diamond, bases 90 feet apart, nine players to a side, games last nine innings, innings end when three outs are recorded and having a set batting order.
It will be the 13th annual visit, and the program will begin at 10 a.m. next to Cartwright’s family grave site.
In 1939, Cartwright was inducted into baseball’s Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, N.Y.
Cartwright, who also performed many civic duties in Hawaii, died in 1892 at age 72 in Honolulu.
Speakers at the event include: Don Robbs, Jack Sullivan, Pal Eldredge, Jim Leahey, Hervy Kurisu and A.J. Cartwright IV.
