HPU wins 10th national cheerleading title
For the 10th consecutive year, Hawaii Pacific University’s large co-ed cheer team claimed first place Friday in the National Cheerleaders Association Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla.
HPU’s small co-ed cheer team also placed first for its sixth national title.
The Sea Warriors dance team placed third in the Dance Open II category of the National Dance Alliance Championships and fourth in the Hip Hop category.
The NCA/NDA Collegiate Cheer and Dance Championship hosts more than 5,000 student athletes and remains the largest college cheer and dance championship in the world.
Mason leads Mid-Pac Open by 1 stroke
Nick Mason fired a 3-under-par 69 Friday to take a one-shot lead after the second round of the Mid-Pacific Open golf tournament at Mid-Pacific Country Club.
Mason has a two-round total of 5-under 139, followed by ‘Iolani senior Lorens Chan and Nathan Lashley at 4-under 140. John Ellis and Russell Surber share fourth place at 141.
David Ishii was at 143 and Dean Wilson at 144.
Rounds 3 and 4 are scheduled for 6:30 a.m. today and Sunday.
Idaho shades Hawaii in WAC men’s tennis
Idaho swept all three doubles matches for the one point the Vandals needed Friday to defeat Hawaii 4-3 in Western Athletic Conference men’s tennis in Logan, Utah.
UH got singles wins from Dmytro Kovalyov, Nils Schuhmann and Danilo Casanova. The Rainbows (5-11, 2-2 WAC) play Utah State in Logan today.
HPU slips by Dixie State in baseball
Derek Nakasato singled home the tying run, and Rylan Morihara drove in the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice as Hawaii Pacific plated two runs in the bottom of the eighth for a 2-1 win over Dixie State in Pacific West Conference baseball Friday at Hans L’Orange Park.
Dixie State won the day’s second game 12-11.
