Maui County workers have completed rebuilding the Hana­wana Land Bridge, enabling vehicular travel for some 40 stranded residents.

Construction crews completed the work Friday as scheduled after about two weeks of work in East Maui, said county spokes­man Rod Antone.

Part of the dirt road collapsed March 9 after a deluge and fell more than 100 feet down a steep slope.

While residents were able to walk across the road, vehicles were unable to make the crossing.

Many of the residents work in Central Maui, and some were not able to go to work or had to rely upon others for transportation, a resident said.

County Public Works Director David Goode said the work was done in-house and cost less than the initial estimate of $250,000.

Goode said he was happy no major rain occurred during the repairs.

"The weather cooperated," he said.

Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa’s administration decided to go ahead with fixing the road even though the responsibility for repairs seemed unclear.

State Sen. J. Kalani English (D, East Maui-Lanai-Molokai) said the responsibility for fixing the road is in limbo because after statehood the state did not claim ownership, and the county has not accepted it by ordinance.

English has said he plans to help secure state money for the emergency repairs.
