Lions Club puts on luau
The Pali Lions Club is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its charter with a luau April 28 at St. Anthony’s Church in Kailua.
The 50th Anniversary Charter Luau includes pupu, door prizes, Hawaiian music and food from Young’s Fish Market. Tickets are $35.

Chef Wong to lead benefit
Chef Alan Wong will serve as honorary chef chairman of the inaugural Share Our Strength’s Taste of the Nation Hawaii dinner on April 29 at Bishop Museum. Taste of the Nation focuses on childhood hunger.
Chefs, farmers and mixologists are donating their time and talent.
Proceeds will benefit ‘Aina in Schools, a program of Kokua Hawaii Foundation, and the Hawaii Foodbank.
The dinner, from 5 to 9:30 p.m., will feature local food and drink pairings, a silent auction and entertainment. Tickets are $100 in advance, $125 at the door; VIP tickets are sold out, but some may be available at the door for $175. Visit www.strength.org/hawaii.
Kau coffees rate high
Three coffees from Kau on Hawaii island were rated among the top 10 coffees of the year at an annual cupping competition in Long Beach, Calif., hosted by the Roasters’ Guild of the Specialty Coffee Association of America.
The Kau coffees are The Rising Sun (growers Will and Grace Tabios), Rusty’s Hawaiian (Lorie Obra) and Ali‘i Hawaiian Hula Hands Coffee (Francis and Trinidad Marques).
Growers will attend the association’s annual Expo in Portland, Ore., today through Sunday.
More than 250 coffees from 26 countries competed for the 2011-2012 season.

Classes on macrobiotics
Learn to cook the macrobiotic way with Warren Kramer.
Kramer will teach three-hour classes on such topics as "Essential Dishes for Modern Times," "Gourmet Macrobiotic Meal," "Cooking for Women’s Health," "Gluten-Free Cooking" and "Creating Richness in Cooking."
Classes will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. April 26 and 27, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. April 28 and 2 to 5 p.m. April 29 at a private home in Manoa.
Cost is $45 advance, $50 at the door. Location will be provided at time of enrollment. Space is limited, so register early.
