Hawaii’s Hunt, Castello honored by MPSF
University of Hawaii men’s volleyball player Steven Hunt has been named a second-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation selection, while Nick Castello made honorable mention.
Hunt, a senior outside hitter from Toronto, led the Warriors with 4.15 kills per set this season. During the season, he became the 14th player in school history to record 1,000 career kills.
Castello, a senior libero from Honolulu, averaged 2.28 digs per set this season for UH (7-20 overall and 4-18 MPSF).
USC’s Micah Christenson, a Kamehameha Schools alum, was named MPSF Freshman of the Year. He averaged 10.85 assists per set for the Trojans (22-4 and 18-4).
USC’s Tony Ciarelli was voted the conference’s Player of the Year.
BYUH, HPU women’s tennis teams advance
No. 1 seed Brigham Young-Hawaii and No. 2 seed Hawaii Pacific won their quarterfinal matchups Thursday during the Pacific West Conference Women’s Tennis Championships at San Rafael, Calif.
BYU-Hawaii beat No. 8 Dominican 5-1, while HPU swept Dixie State 5-0. No. 4 Academy of Art defeated No. 5 Chaminade 5-1, while No. 3 Grand Canyon beat No. 6 Hawaii-Hilo 5-1.
The Seasiders’ Marika Kobayashi, Sasha Ulbrichtova and Sophia Simmons won in singles, while Marietta Tuionetoa/Ulbrichtova and Kaylyn Bristol/Simmons won in doubles.
The Sea Warriors’ Zora Vlckova and Celina Goetti each beat their Dixie State opponent 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, HPU’s Vivian Hansen/Magdalena Smejova, Goetti/Ielyzaveta Rybakova and Vlckova/Lea Kruse-Utermann won their matches.
Hawaii surfers in contention in Panama
Hawaii still is in the running for the DAKINE ISA World Junior Surfing Championship after Thursday’s fourth day of competition at Playa Venao, Panama.
Hawaii’s Kalani David and Josh Moniz are alive in the boys U-16 division, while Kain Daly is competing in the boys U-18 division.
Hawaii’s Tatiana Weston-Webb and Mahina Maeda remain in the girls U-18 division.
Hawaii, Peru, Australia, the United States and France are competing for the team title.
