The University of Hawaii softball team claimed a series win at Nevada, but left Reno less than satisfied with the conclusion.
The No. 14/18 Rainbow Wahine split a doubleheader with the Wolf Pack on Saturday, winning the first game 6-2 before dropping the finale 4-0 at Hixson Park.
Back-to-back home runs by senior Alex Aguirre and freshman Leisha Li‘ili‘i in the seventh inning put some distance between the Wahine and the Wolf Pack in the opener, and UH clinched the Western Athletic Conference series with their fifth straight win.
Nevada pitcher Mallary Darby, who took the loss in Friday’s series opener, then threw her second shutout of the season in the series finale, finishing with seven strikeouts and walking none.
With the split, UH returns home at 37-5 overall and 11-3 in WAC play and in second place in the WAC, trailing Fresno State (31-17, 11-2) in the conference standings.
UH concludes its home schedule this week with a three-game series with Fresno State starting Friday.
“I think everybody’s disappointed with the way the series ended,” Aguirre said. “It wasn’t any one thing, it was a lot of things that rolled together. … We know we can’’t play that way against Fresno State.”
In Saturday’s first game, UH took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on run-scoring singles by Dara Pagaduan and Makani Duhaylonsod-Kaleimamahu. Nevada answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth and again in the fifth after UH took a 3-1 lead on Li‘ili‘i’s RBI single.
UH junior Kaia Parnaby protected the 3-2 lead into the seventh and got some breathing room when Aguirre hit a two-run homer to center and Li‘ili‘i followed with her ninth homer of the season.
“All I did was throw my hands at it and it went out,” Aguirre said.
Parnaby closed out the win to improve to 14-2, finishing with nine strikeouts and one walk.
Nevada (17-30, 7-8) took its first lead of the series in the second inning of the final game when Sara Parsons doubled and Megan Fincher followed with an RBI single. The Wolf Pack added to the lead with a three-run fourth, aided by two UH errors.
“They had hits that found holes and we didn’t make the plays,” UH head coach Bob Coolen said.
Darby gave up six hits but kept UH off the scoreboard, as the Wahine were shut out for only the second time this season.
UH senior Stephanie Ricketts lost her first WAC game of the season and fell to
23-3. Her string of 25 complete games ended.
