Mayor Wright is scene of fourth stabbing
A 34-year-old man was seriously injured early Sunday morning when he was stabbed while outside Mayor Wright Homes where another stabbing incident Thursday morning left a man in serious condition.
Sunday’s stabbing occurred near the public housing project just before 3 a.m., police said. An unknown assailant used a "dangerous weapon," then fled, police said.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital.
The incident was the fourth stabbing case at the complex since September.
On Thursday, in what police called an "unprovoked attack," a man was wounded just after he had parked his car in front of the complex. He was stabbed twice in his cheek and twice in his shoulder blade.
That attack happened just before 2 a.m. on Liliha Street, police said. Police arrested a suspect, 24, in that case.
On Jan. 27 a 32-year-old man died and three others were seriously injured in a stabbing that the prosecutor later said was self-defense.
On Sept. 10, police arrested 21-year-old Takson Krstoth in the fatal stabbing of TJ "Tipuk" Mori, 24, after an argument at the complex. Krstoth was charged with second-degree murder and is awaiting trial.
The Public Housing Authority hired Matt Levi Security to provide security at the complex starting last month.
Rescuers help 4 hikers lost in Koolaus
Bad weather forced the Honolulu Fire Department to abandon efforts Sunday to retrieve three male hikers in the Koolau mountains by helicopter, but firefighters helped them hike out on their own after dark.
Around 2:30 p.m. the helicopter plucked one member of the hiking group, a female, from a ridge, but clouds closed in, making further air attempts too dangerous.
Instead, three rescue firefighters were flown to the west side of the Koolaus, where they hiked up, met the three male hikers and escorted them down by 7:45 p.m., Capt. Terry Seelig said.
All four members of the group are in the military, stationed on Oahu and appear to be in their 20s, Seelig said.
They set off Sunday morning from Moanalua Valley in muddy, chilly conditions and got disoriented, Seelig said. So they set off in search for the Haiku stairs, sometimes called the Stairway to Heaven, in Kaneohe, which are off limits.
"They didn’t intend to go down the Windward side," Seelig said. "They realized it was a lot harder hike than they expected."
Firefighters spotted the group around 1 p.m. and dropped a firefighter who helped airlift the woman to Hoomaluhia Botanical Gardens in Kaneohe, Seelig said.
Fire in hotel laundry room quickly put out
Overheated rags sent smoke spewing in a fourth-floor dryer at the Hawaiian Monarch Hotel Sunday night, causing some guests to pull fire alarms and evacuate the Niu Street hotel, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.
The fire was reported at 7:18 p.m. The first firefighters arrived at 7:22 p.m., and the blaze was extinguished at 7:40 p.m., Seelig said.
It caused $5,000 in damage to the dryer but no damage to the building, Seelig said.
