Mostly it’s serious business, as University of Hawaii football coach Norm Chow and his staff of drill instructors/assistant coaches have definitely let the Warriors know there’s a new sheriff in town — one serious about getting things done quickly and efficiently.
Of course every new staff starts out this way, and you just wait to see what things will be like when that first blast of adrenaline wears off. The initial shock and awe part is over now, and camp comes to a close on Friday with the final scrimmage of the spring … or, to the fans, the Warrior Bowl.
Practice is still crisp, and everyone has learned that to be on time you must be early.
But Chow’s been around long enough to know you have to mix in some frivolity and levity for the young guys. It is still a game, isn’t it? They’re still called players, not employees, right?
Tuesday’s practice session featured a dance-off during stretching drills. That’s one way to get loose.
CHOW IS EXTREMELY organized, and it’s impressive how he coached up his assistants in such a short amount of time leading up to the first spring practice. Keep in mind many of these men never worked together before. But the chemistry of the staff seems to be good.
As for the synergy of the players, we won’t know until some starting positions are settled … especially quarterback and offensive line. And those spots don’t appear to be anywhere close to being decided.
The quarterback situation is actually muddier than it was last month when camp began and David Graves came in with something his competitors did not: significant Division I experience, having started two games for UH last fall.
But Graves — normally the kind of athlete to whom things come easy — hasn’t transitioned smoothly from the run-and-shoot to Chow’s multiple sets and has not performed well in scrimmages.
This, along with No. 2 Cayman Shutter’s suspension, has given Saint Louis grad and Utah State transfer Jeremy Higgins an opportunity. And he has made the most of it.
“Jeremy’s making a move,” Chow said matter-of-factly before Tuesday’s practice. “David has not been productive.”
Chow, though, is far from giving up on Graves and handing the job to Higgins. Get some popcorn, this one will probably go on awhile.
Higgins has good size. He is listed at 6 feet 1 and 200 pounds, but looks a little bigger. He’s left-handed, if that means anything (and even if it doesn’t). The last time I saw him play in a game he looked good. But that was in an ILH game three years ago, and he shared time with Marcus Mariota who is now battling for the starting spot at Oregon.
THE OFFENSIVE LINE won’t be settled until fall camp. Chow is awaiting a JC transfer, Mike Milovale, and true freshman Kiha Sai will get a look.
The Warrior Bowl won’t decide anything, Chow said. In some ways it’s akin to the dancing during stretching. A break from the drudgery.
He said he wants the players to “go out and have some fun on Friday.”
“Every day’s important,” Chow said. “The least important is the spring whatever-we-call-it.”
