Individually, Cat Goya and Megan Yoshimoto will go down as two of the best women’s tennis players ever at Pacific (Ore.).
But could they have done it without each other side-by-side?
Fortunately for both, they’ll never have to worry about it.
Goya, a 2008 graduate of St. Andrew’s Priory and Yoshimoto, an ’08 Mililani alumna, did not know each other despite going to high school on the same island.
In fact, the two met at Pacific before they had any idea the other played tennis.
"We were actually neighbors in the freshman dorms and we didn’t know each of us played tennis until we went out for the team," Yoshimoto said.
Almost instantly, the two became close friends and shared a bond that helped them dominate the Northwest Conference for four years.
Last Friday, Goya became the program’s first, four-time All-Northwest Conference honoree. Yoshimoto was selected to the second team for the fourth time in as many years.

Goya led the team with a 13-4 record at No. 1 singles and was 9-3 against conference foes. She won seven of her last eight matches despite a nagging shoulder injury, and her 13 wins is tied for the most by an NWC player.
Yoshimoto went 8-5 at No. 2 singles and finished off the year with four straight wins to give her 40 victories overall in her career.
The two enjoyed just as much success in doubles, where they were paired together their entire collegiate careers.
They posted a 9-4 record as seniors and won 34 matches overall together.
They both agreed their favorite moment came at the end of the fall season as freshmen, when they competed in the ITA West Region Small College Tennis Championships and advanced all the way to the finals, setting the stage for a brilliant four-year career together.
"Our final tournament that (fall) season, we put Pacific tennis on the map and we kept them there," Goya said. "Getting to stick with each other and play with Megan all four years is definitely the greatest tennis experience."
Yoshimoto echoed the same sentiments.
"Pacific tennis wasn’t really thought of that highly and we came in as freshmen and kind of put them on the map that fall tournament," Yoshimoto said. "Now people have to take not just us, but our entire team as a threat now."
The two will play both singles and doubles in the prestigious Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament in Ventura and Oxnard, Calif., beginning on Thursday.
Once tennis is over, both have chosen to continue their education, but at different schools.
Goya will stay at Pacific for a masters program in education while Yoshimoto will head to the University of Washington to enroll in pharmacy school.
